Three magnificent Mexican plates, broken and reincarnated as art––that’s what captured me in 2000 and set me on the course of a self-taught mosaic artist. Hunkered down in my lakeside studio, fueled with solitude, nature, a warm fire, a cup a tea and music, I configure shards of materials into abstract or representational renderings. As I position these tesserae, a full story falls into place––a union of my own story, that of my subject matter and those of the materials I select to execute my designs. Projects come alive, and the sense of coming full circle with life breathes in me. And for those who care to receive it, I share a small part of my complete story with every mosaic I piece together.
My inspiration does not come from a single source but from the moment, seasons, feelings, and sounds that envelop me. Ideas swirl around for months before coming to fruition as a tangible piece of mosaic art.
Authenticity is a must for my tesserae. Stones, glass, beads, china, fabric, and jewels are organic.
How appropriate that I should be working in mosaic. Like my life, mosaics consist of many facets, pieces glued together in a coherent, yet eclectic, whole. Mosaic art is more than a frivolous pastime for me; it is a thoughtful approach to expressing my story. No matter the subject, at its core, my art is me.
